FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

I did not do any apprenticeship. – What apprenticeship will I need to do, if I want to study at the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

We suggest an industrial apprenticeship as a shoemaker because it conveys the basics of industrial shoe production and it directly prepares for the German College of Footwear Design and Technology. Alternatively we accept skilled bespoke shoemakers, orthopaedic shoemakers, shoe and leather goods stitchers and other respectively qualified persons.

I am a shoe and leather goods stitcher / qualified person – but I didn’t do my apprenticeship in the industry. Can I still attend the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

Yes, you can. However, in this case you need to have a record of practical experience of at least 12 months in a shoe manufacturing business.

I am a saddler / bag-maker / fine bag-maker. Can I attend the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

The same applies here. Because important shoe-related aspects that are required might be lacking, you need to have proof of practical experience of at least 12 months in a shoe manufacturing business.

I am a tailor / dress maker. Can I attend the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

The apprenticeship as tailor / dress maker has a lot of similarities to leather processing professions but lacks shoe and leather related aspects. A practical training / internship of at least 2 years in a shoe manufacturing company enables you to attend the German College of Footwear Design and Technology.

I have already studied fashion design but would like to specialize in shoes and accessories. Can I continue my studies at the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

A fashion design study which includes the basics of pattern construction and production technology can be partly accepted as relevant. We will decide after an interview if a practical training / internship of 12-24 months will be required.

What can be considered as practical training?

A practical training / an internship is an in-house instruction in a shoe manufacturing business, which leads the trainee through all areas of production in order to acquire the necessary basics and skills. We are happy to send you a practical training plan if required.

I’m not really a talented artist / drawer. Should I enrol in shoe model design or industrial shoe engineering?

Although drawing can be learned to a certain extent, we recommend model design only to creatively talented persons.

Will I be able to support myself and work while I’m studying at the German College of Footwear Design and Technology?

Not really. The further training takes place over a period of 2 years. There are no classes during the school holidays of Rhineland-Palatinate (http://mbwwk.rlp.de/service/ferientermine-in-rlp/). Attendance to the lessons is obligatory for 30 hours a week. In addition, there are larger projects that will take up at least another 10 hours of your week. All this adds up to a full-time job.
